How to Measure a Trailer Axle?

Spring vs. Torsion Trailer Axles: What’s the Big Deal?
The main difference between spring and torsion trailer axles is the type of suspension system each uses.

Spring axles are the most common type, utilizing leaf springs to absorb shock and manage the weight of the trailer.

Torsion axles, on the other hand, use torsion bars, which are a type of suspension that uses a rotating bar to absorb shock.

Torsion bar axles are considered to be more robust and provide a smoother ride than spring axles.

They also require less maintenance, as they do not require regular greasing or replacement of leaf springs.

Additionally, they are more expensive than spring axles.

How to Measure a Trailer Axle?
1. Park the trailer on a level surface, and chock the wheels to prevent the trailer from moving.

2. Measure the distance between the centers of the axle mounting points.
This is the wheelbase, which is the distance between the middle of the axle and the center of the wheel.

3. Measure the track width, which is the distance between the centers of the wheels.

4. Measure the overall length of the axle, which is the distance between the center of the axle mounting points and the outer edges of the wheels.

5. Measure the diameter of the axle.
The diameter is the distance across the axle shaft.

6. Measure the offset of the axle, which is the distance between the center of the axle and the center of the wheel.

7. Measure the hub face, which is the distance between the center of the axle and the center of the hub.

8. Measure the backspace, which is the distance between the center of the hub and the outer edge of the wheel.
