Add brakes to an idler trailer axle

An idler trailer axle is a non-driven axle that does not have brakes, hubs, or wheels attached to it.

Idler axle trailers are typically used for utility trailers, boat trailers, and other light-duty trailers.

They are designed to support the trailer and its cargo, but not to drive the trailer or provide braking power.

You can add brakes to an idler trailer axle. Depending on the axle type, brakes can be added to the hub of the axle, or external brakes can be installed on the axle shaft.

Add brakes to an idler trailer axle:
1. Obtain the correct brakes for the axle size.
2. Disconnect the electrical connection from the trailer.
3. Remove the hub and drum assembly from the axle.
4. Install the brake shoes, springs and hardware, following the instructions in the kit.
5. Reinstall the hub and drum assembly onto the axle.
6. Connect the electrical connection to the trailer.
7. Test the brakes and adjust as necessary.
